Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) is a holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, which marked the effective end of slavery in the United States. Despite the popular belief that the Emancipation Proclamation (signed January 1, 1863) instantly released all enslaved peoples when in reality, it didn’t. Read why here.
